Donald Murdoch MacLeod

September 6, 1923 ~ August 7, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Donald M. MacLeod
North Sydney/Lunenburg

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Murdoch MacLeod, age 93, on Monday, August 7, 2017.  Donald passed peacefully, with family at his side.

Henry David Thoreau once said, "Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around."   Donald truly embodied this sentiment, and had an impact on all who came in contact with him throughout his life through his kind and gentle character.  Born September 6, 1923 in Millville, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Dan K. and Murdena (Kerr).  Whether it was as a fun loving and joking school kid (which never left him), living and thriving on the Mill Pond,  a young man who served Canada in the Merchant Marines, or as a loving  husband, partner, father and grandfather, Donald always looked for, and found, the good in others (especially children and dogs!!!)  Donald was a true example of a gentle man.  He loved the sea, and now will return to it.

Donald is survived by many who loved him, including his five children: Alan (Theresa), Honey (Bill), Roseann (Dave), Linda (Terry) and Donald (Mary Joan) and well as their mother Mary Louise (McCarthy).  Donald is also survived by his sister Mae MacKenzie, his 9 grandchildren, Alana, Amanda, Daniel, Kate, Erin, Alex, Laura, Kiera and Sam, and his great-grandchildren J.J., Stella and Sam.

Donald will also be dearly missed by his partner and companion of over 20 years Shirley McKay, along with her sons Larry (Cheryl) and their children Melanie and Tanner, Richard (Don) and the rest of the McKay family who played such an important role in his life.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, sisters Betty and Mary, and brothers Allan, Duncan and John.

The family wishes to extend its greatest appreciation for all of the love and care Donald received at Harbourview Veterans Wing in Sydney Mines and the Fishermans Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg over the past two years. Your care and thoughtfulness will always be remembered and treasured.  Thank you for making his final days as comfortable as possible.

There will be no visitation by request.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 9th, at the Bras d'Or Hall, 24 Villa Dr. Little Bras d'Or, between 2 and 6 p.m.  Special thoughts and remembrances will be shared at 3:30.  All are welcome.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
