It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our mother Hazel Lillian Anderson on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the age of 97. She passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital where she had been a resident at Taigh Solas.

Born in Petites, Newfoundland on September 21, 1926 and lived there until 1955 when mom and dad moved to North Sydney to raise their five children.  Mom was a hard worker all her life and always tried to take care of everyone.  She loved cooking delicious meals and was well known for her baking skills.  When you left mom’s house you always had an armful of special treats to take home.  Another joy for mom was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved. They would always bring a smile to her face. 

Mom was also a lady of faith with a great belief in God.  She loved to read her bible and often could be heard playing her piano and singing her favourite hymns. 

Left to mourn her passing are her children, Ruth (Melvin) Swyer, Joan (Eric) Boutilier, Becky (Lorne) Penny, Sam (Tammy) and Freddy (Jennifer White); her two sisters Gayle Farrow, Windsor, Ontario and Joyce Kerr, Farmington, USA; also her 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.  

Besides her parents Robert and Jenny (Billard) Gosse, she was predeceased by her husband Fred at an early age, whom she loved and missed dearly. She was also predeceased by her siblings Harold, Ritchie, Anne, Sybil and Claira.

We would like to send special thanks to Dr. Andrew Wawer for his constant care and kindness to our mom and to the staff at Taigh Solas, third floor Northside General Hospital for their care and kindness. 

Visitation for Hazel will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to “Taigh Solas”, c/o Northside Harbour View Hospital Foundation.
