Monina "Nennie" Matthews

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Monina “Nennie” Matthews – loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many - at the age of 63 on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. Born in North Sydney on May 2, 1960, she was the daughter of Marion (Leroy) and the late Robert Hancock.

Nennie enjoyed simple pleasures in life. She loved to sit outside and listen to the birds and take in the comings and goings of the neighborhood. She enjoyed trips to the beach in the summertime and loved long talks with her good friends, Tevis Ongo and Chrissy MacDonald. Her greatest joy in life was her family, most especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Nennie is survived by her mother, Marion (Ed) Clarke; her children – Bridgett (Paul) Barrie, Amanda Matthews (Jonathan), Stephen Squires (Evelyn), and Gloria Boutilier; her grandchildren – Paula Barrie, Emily Barrie, Hannah Barrie, Justin Matthews, and Jordan Matthews; siblings – Suzie Publicover, Sandra Jessome, Cathy Clarke, Tammy Boutilier, John Hancock, Gordie Hancock, and Robbie Hancock, along with many nieces and nephews.

Besides her father, Nennie was predeceased by her husband, Frank, as well as her brother, Billy, who died in infancy.

A visitation for Nennie will be held from 1-3pm on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, with a funeral service beginning at 3pm of the same day in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel at 107 pleasant St. in North Sydney with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page.
