Oscar Cordero Obituary

Oscar Cordero

North Sydney

We, the family of Oscar Joseph Cordero, age 98, are saddened to announce his passing at Harbourview Hospital on Friday, February 16, 2024.

Dad was born June 25, 1925 in Bras d’Or, the son of the late Joseph “Jose” Cordero and Frances (Richards) Cordero.

Dad was a hard-working man all his life. He started in the coal mines as a teenager, working with his father, before joining the Merchant Marines during WW2. When the war was over, he continued to sail for a few more years. He sailed around the world twice and had many adventures along the way. Anyone who knew him was privileged to hear about these adventures over the years. Some tales were serious and even more amusing. When he returned home to the Gannon Road, he went back to the coal mines for several years before going to work for CN Marine (now Marine Atlantic), where he finished his career and retired at the age of 65.

Dad is survived by daughters, Heather and Holly Cordero, and son, Donnie Cordero, along with his brother Vincie (Laura) Cordero; his grandchildren Shane Gillis, Michelle Gillis, Keith (Stephanie) Gillis, and Samantha Cordero Grandy, along with eight great-granddaughters and one great-great- grandson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Besides his parents, Oscar was predeceased by his wife and the mother of his children, Delores (Harper) Cordero; daughter Michelle Marie Cordero; sisters Mary-Ellen (Russel) Tobin and Bridget (Joe) Glogowski; two siblings in infancy Gloria and Anthony, as well as his second wife Gertrude Cordero.

We the family would like to thank the staff at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines, as well as Dr. Patrick O’Grady and Dr. Andrew Wawer for their care and support of Oscar and his family throughout the years.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. There will be no funeral service at this time. A private burial will take place at a later date. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.

Oscar was a great man who will be missed, but the family takes comfort knowing he was greeted with a warm welcome from all his family on the other side, it’s their turn with you now.

Hope you’re enjoying a nice cold glass of rum and Pepsi, Oscar - see you in the funny papers!

“How you feeling, Dad?” “With both hands.”
