Thomas Cameron Hackett
North Sydney
On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Tom passed away in the home where he grew up in North Sydney. Born on September 28, 1937, he was the son of the late Merle and Margaret (Cameron) Hackett. Tom is survived by his wife Sylvia (MacEachern); sons Robert (Chunling) of Toronto, and Peter (Karen) with grandchildren Emma and Aerin, all of Halifax.
Tom was a graduate of Thompson High School, Mount Allison University and Nova Technical College, graduating in 1961 with a degree in civil engineering. Following graduation, Tom began a career with the Department of Highways, working in various locations in Nova Scotia, including Halifax, Truro, Baddeck and Sydney, retiring in 1997 after serving as District Director for Eastern Nova Scotia. Tom’s joy in life were his grandchildren who kept him entertained with their antics. He was a downhill and cross-country skier and enjoyed early morning golf with his buddies at Bell Bay Golf Club.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the Northside Homemakers for allowing us to keep Tom at home for the past several years, giving him the very best care; the VON for tending to his nursing care, and Dr. Paul Murphy for always being available whenever we reached out to him for his guidance and for Tom’s medical needs.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A graveside service will take place at a later date. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
