Mill Creek

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother, Hilda Harrietha, on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, two days prior to her 93rd birthday. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her devoted family.

Born on June 8, 1925, Hilda was the daughter of the late Peter and Helen (LeBlanc) Thurbide of Alder Point.  On October 29, 1946, Hilda married “the love of her life”, Alphonse Harrietha and they moved to Mill Creek to begin their journey of married life and to raise their family.

Hilda was very devoted to her family and her religion.  She was very accepting of people, seeing their good qualities above everything else.  She enjoyed being in her kitchen and was often baking.  When company visited, she was always quick to put the teapot on and serve lunch, followed by something sweet.  One never left her home feeling hungry.

Hilda was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bras d’Or.  She regularly attended weekly mass up until her health declined, then she enjoyed Mass for Shut-Ins on television.  We would like to thank her brother, Reg Thurbide, for all the times he brought her holy communion at home.  Hilda and Phonse enjoyed three pilgrimages to the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de- Beaupre in Quebec and had great faith in the healing power experienced there.

Hilda is survived by her children, Helen (Kevin) Beaton, Alphonse Harrietha, Dennis (Judy) Harrietha, and Zita (Ches) Harrietha.  She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Granny”, Danielle (Kirk) Francis, and their children Ryan & Madison; Dawn-Michelle (Jamie) Timms, and their children Gavin & Ella; Monique (Blake) Boutilier, and their daughter Reagan; Julie Anne (Gary) Harrietha, Cindy (Jason) Harrietha, special grand-daughter Amanda (Ashley) Timmons and their daughters Kaitlyn & Madilyn; Shawn (Anita) Reashore and their children Jamie Lynn, Michael & Ethan.

She is also survived by sons-in-law Wayne (Cathy) Reashore and Joe Lavery and his children Lisa, Jim & Mike Lavery and their families.

Also left to mourn are Hilda’s brother Reginald (Bridget) Thurbide and sister Mildred MacLean, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Alphonse Harrietha, November 23, 2004, her daughter Anne Harrietha (Reashore) Lavery, brothers Stanley and Solomon Thurbide, sisters Eva McGrath, Grace MacDonald and Margaret Marsh.

Visitation for Hilda will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday (today) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating with burial to follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or or a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.

“Be not afraid,

I go before you always,

Come follow Me,

And I shall give you rest.”
