Joseph (Chicago Joe) Donovan, 76

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joseph Richard Donovan, age 76, on Saturday January 27, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Joe passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born May 1st, 1941 in North Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Josephine (Phillips) Donovan. Joe was employed at Marine Atlantic until his retirement. He was well known for being the Chicago Blackhawks number one fan. As well Joe treasured his many memories and friends from the Gannon Road. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Father William Kiely Council, Knights of Columbus.
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years Brenda (Alderson) Donovan, his daughters Joanne (Kevin) Harnish, Truro, Angela (Dave) Ivany, Thunder Bay, Noella (Rob) Seury, North Sydney, five grandchildren Kelsey Donovan, Brayden and Nicholas Ivany, MaKenna and Donovan Harnish, also by his sisters Mary Gillis and Florence Wilson, both of North Sydney.
Joe was predeceased by his sister Katie Ivey and his brother Danny Donovan, as well as two brothers in infancy.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Bill MacDonald, the dialysis unit at the Northside General Hospital, paramedics with EHS, the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. A special thanks to Doug Rose, Rick Walsh, Clayton Penny, John Parsons and Dougie Keagan for always being there for Joe.
Visitation for Joe will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
