Kevin Paul Tompkins Obituary

Paul Tompkins

North Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, brother, uncle and friend Paul Tompkins, age 69, on Monday July 8, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney with family by his side.

Born in North Sydney, August 30, 1949, Paul was the eldest son of the late Jerome and Eileen (Higgins) Tompkins of Sydney Mines and Margaree. Paul worked as a car salesman in Sydney for over 40 years, with Tonet Chyrsler, Yazer Pontiac, May Pontiac, and later for many years he was a proud and loyal employee of MacDonald Nissan. During employment he greatly appreciated his many customers and colleagues.

Paul loved Cape Breton immensely, living on the Northside as well as experiencing wonderful moments at the cottage and family farm in North East Margaree. Affectionately known as “The Man” by his family and close friends because of his stature and presence, Paul was often the life of the party, telling stories and jokes and playing music. He enjoyed life every day, with one of his favourite expressions; “You can’t beat fun for a good time”. Paul’s interests included the company of his many friends, listening to music, swimming and diving, cars and motorcycles, playing chess, a game of snooker, reading and he enjoyed fine scotch. He had a special talent for photography, capturing hundreds of beautiful photos of Nova Scotia scenery.

Paul is survived by his son Aidan Tompkins, Halifax; close friend and companion Patricia Lawless; his brothers Gerard (Joan), Bedford, Keiren (Cynthia), Halifax, Adrian (Mary), Myron (Lori Parenteau), both of Moncton, Brendan (Luc Morin), Vancouver; former wife and mother of his son Denise (Gillis); uncle and aunt Arthur and Marguerite Higgins, North Sydney, uncle John MacLean, Margaree Forks; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, Paul was predeceased by an infant brother.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank all those who provided excellent and compassionate care for Paul including staff at Northside General and Harbourview Hospitals, Alderwood Long Term Care Facility and Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Emergency, Intensive Care and Palliative Care Units. A special thanks to Fr. Paul McGillvray, Chaplain at the CB Regional Hospital.

Visitation for Paul will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday August 1, 2019 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday August 3rd at St. Patrick’s Church, North East Margaree with Rev MacDonald Ibeh officiating followed by burial in the parish cemetery and reception in the parish hall.

No flowers by request, instead memorial donations can be made to St. Patrick’s Cemetery Fund, The Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation or any charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
