Mary Josephine “Deany” Walker
Bras d’Or
Our precious mother Deany (Mary Josephine) Walker 88, went peacefully to her heavenly home, Sunday, October 27, 2019.
Born in her beloved Margaree Forks, mom was the fifth of eight children born to Jessie (Coady) and Tom Chisholm on October 3, 1931.
With many religious as her teacher role models, she herself became a teacher, graduating from the Provincial Normal College in Truro in 1949. She taught for 34 years, and since her retirement on Halloween Day in 1986, former students upon meeting her would frequently say “Ms. Walker, you were my favourite teacher”.
While teaching in Alder Point she met and married our dad, John Walker. Sharing love and life they had five children: Gail (Ronnie), Bruce, Emily (Fred), Susan (Gerard), and Paula (Sheldon). They were married for 63 wonderful years.
Mom loved music, dances, and Saturday night card games with dad and other very special couple friends. We also happily remember so many fun filled summer vacations spent camping in Margarees with she and dad. She made the most delicious apple pies, and offered sweet treats as bingo prizes when grandchildren had sleepovers… John Todd (Samantha), Mitchell (Katie), Brendan (Catherine), Paul (Sarah), Josh (Catherine), Frances (Taylor), Rachael, and Bethany (Grant). Now we await the joyful arrival of a fifth great grandchild joining precious Gracie, Ruby, Luke and Claire. She and dad also have two International foster children.
Mom’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She shared her gifts in her parish communities of St. Ann and St. Joseph by participating in many wonderful groups and organizations: RCIA, Fire of Love prayer group, lector, CWL, parish choirs, St. Vincent de Paul and religious education. She and dad especially enjoyed and learned so much as associate members of the Sisters of St. Martha for many years.
Mom will be lovingly remembered and missed by her siblings Peggy, Emily, Doug and Harold, as she joins their mom, dad and brothers Bernie, Hugh and Jim.
And so, with tears of love and deep gratitude we say farewell to a dear Wife, Mom, and Nanny, and entrust her to the tender care of Her Good Shepherd who has called and led her eternal home.
Special thanks to mom’s kind, compassionate family physician Dr. Doug Kohlsmith, his sweet secretary Karen, and the caring staff of 4 West, Northside General Hospital.
Visitation for mom will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm, Wednesday October 30, 2019 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 Thursday, October 31, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Father Peter McLeod officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. The family would like to invite everyone to reception at St. Joseph’s Community Center immediately following the burial. In leu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com
