With deepest sorrow, the family of Mary Joan Beaton, regret to announce her passing on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital with family by her side.
Born in Beechmont, she was the daughter of the late D.J. and Mary (MacDonald) MacKenzie. Following Sydney Academy, Joan attended Provincial Normal College and then taught in a one-room school house for several years, before leaving to start her family. In later years, she and Frank established and operated “Joan Beaton Greenhouse which ran for 15 years. Joan was a member of St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek.
Joan is survived by her children Lorna, Wilson (Anna), Bruce (Bernadette), Nancy (Michael) Florian, Brenda Beaton, Susan (Robert) MacLellan and daughter-in-law Rachelle. Also surviving are her grandchildren MacKenzie and Steven, Logan, Molly, Benjamin and Emma, Jacob, Alexandra, Mary Michelle, Charlotte and Jonathan, Connor and Nikki, Stephen and Jennifer as well as great-grandchildren Adrianna, Henry, Hugo and Susanna. Also left to mourn is her sister Mora King, sisters-in-law Isabel MacKenzie and Clara Beaton who was so special to Joan and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her loving husband Frank and her eldest son David. She was also predeceased by her siblings Lois, Rodney, Agnes, Hugh and Earl.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for their kindness and excellent care of Joan during her stay.
Joan was a treasured member of our family and will be dearly missed.
Visitation for Joan will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Columba United Church with Norma Mills officiating. Burial will take place in Calvin United Church Cemetery, Upper Leitches Creek.
