Shirley MacQueen Obituary

Shirley Florence (Haggett) MacQueen

North Sydney

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Shirley Florence MacQueen of Seaview Drive, on the morning of January 15, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John Joe and Trixella (Symmonds) Haggett.

For more than 65 years Shirley was an active member of St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek where she was a member of the UCW for many years. An avid painter and famous for her knitting skills, Shirley spent many years working at the Hobby Hut in North Sydney. Her crib skills were to be envied and she was proud of having had a perfect hand on more than one occasion.

Prior to her passing, Shirley was a resident of Parkland Assisted Living where she spent her days with two very special friends, Louis Allen and Kay MacDonald.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Lorna Dolmont and Lynn Clarke (Rollie); five grandchildren Joe Dolmont (Leah), Michelle Toner (Brendan), Mark Dolmont (Julie), Hiliary Clarke (Omri) Haley Clarke; four great grandchildren Mya Dolmont, Ryan and Sean-Patrick Toner and Levi Dolmont.  Also surviving are her sisters Doris (Eric) Sibley and Marlene Long, nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband John “Jack” MacQueen, her sisters, Helen Magnan, Nita Henn, Joyce Hickey and brothers, Brenton, Gordon and Russell.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Parkland Assisted Living as well as the staff of An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Shirley.

There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Columba United Church, Leitches Creek, with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
