Walter Charles Johnston
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Charles Johnston on Monday, July 30, 2018, at the age of 89, after a courageous battle with Parkinson Disease.
Born in North Sydney on January 7, 1929, to the late James and Carrie (Newman) Johnston.
Walter worked for Marine Atlantic for 53 years. A quiet, gentle man who enjoyed a good laugh, listening to his music and conversations over a cup of tea and sweet. His greatest joy was his family.
Walter is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, June and their children, Sherry (Lloyd Serroul), Diane (Greg Dawe) and Jimmy (Shelley); grandchildren, Sherrylynn (Jeff MacKinnon) and Joshua and fur baby Marley. Also, by his brother Nelson (Celesta) and sister-in-law Yvonne (Willie Johnston) as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers Ronald, Percy, William and sisters, Marie (Johnny Steele), Queenie (Ron Crosby), Frances (George Hillier) and infant sister Genevieve.
The family would like to thank Dr. Beth MacCormick as well as Palliative Care, VON, Home Care and the nursing staff of 4th Floor at the Northside General Hospital.
There will be a private family viewing and burial at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society or Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
