William “Billy” Gardiner

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of William “Billy” Gardiner, on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.

Born in Sydney Mines, June 14, 1930, he was the son of the late James and Ella (MacNeil) Gardiner.

Billy was a gifted athlete playing for many senior and intermediate hockey teams on the Northside along with being a standout baseball player for the Sydney Mines Ramblers. Billy spent 41 years working for MT&T in Sydney and on the Northside, a career he loved from which he obtained lifetime friends.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Billy is survived by his special nephew and caregiver, Billy Morrison (Tracey), Sydney Mines; brothers-in-law, Gerard Morrison, Baddeck, Donald Burke, Massachusetts, sisters-in-law, Phemie Menard, North Sydney, MaryLee MacPherson, Sydney Mines, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Catherine “Kay” (Morrison) Gardiner, sisters-in-law Miriam Morrison, Theresa Burke, Collette Morrison and brothers-in-law, James Morrison, Gerard Morrison, Fraser MacPherson and Marcel Menard, uncles, Joe MacNeil, Hamilton “Hammie” MacNeil and aunts, Trudy Young and Gertie Quinn.

The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Poulos for his dedication and his exceptional care provided to Billy the past number of years, along with private care giver Stephanie Cousins and the daily visits from the VON.

Visitation for Billy will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Doug MacDonald presiding. Burial will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
