Alexander "Alex" Woodrow Nicholson Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alexander Woodrow "Nick" Nicholson, age 90, beloved father, brother and uncle on Saturday, March 21st, 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.


Born in Little Pond, NS, Alex was the son of the late Roderick MacDonald and Mary (Jardine) Nicholson. He was a faithful and active member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church, North Sydney, a former Sunday school teacher and choir member, and served as an Elder for more than 50 years.


After a career in retail and wholesaling Alex became a teacher in 1975 and for 20 years taught Marketing and Retail Merchandising at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines.


He was a Past Master of Royal Albert Lodge #19, and a member of Sydney Lodge #84 A.F.&A.M. He was also Past District Grand Director of Ceremonies for the former Cape Breton Centre Masonic District and a Past Worthy Patron of Munroe Chapter #26, Order of Eastern Star. Alex was a loyal supporter of the Cape Breastoners Dragon Boat Team.


An avid musician and lover of traditional music, Alex was best known as a fiddler but also played guitar, bass and mandolin.


He is survived by his son Scott ‘Sandy’ Nicholson, North Sydney; sister Sally Popovich, Sydney Mines; step-sister Trudy Herrit, Florence, as well as many loving and beloved nieces and nephews.


Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara; a sister, Lennie Pardy; step-sister Ronalda Bowne and step-mother Lorraine Nicholson.


Visitation for Alex will be held from 2-4p.m. and 7-9p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. A funeral service will be held the following day on March 27 at 2p.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Campbell Street, North Sydney with Rev. Ken MacLeod officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church.
