It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Augustine Riou, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the age of 98, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her family by her side.

Born in Long Point, Inverness Co., she was the daughter of the late John Francis and Margaret Mary (MacNeil) Chisholm. Augustine was a dedicated homemaker who spent her life as the kindest and most caring wife, mother, and grandmother. Of the seven children she raised, five of them honorably served in the Canadian Armed Forces for a total of 75 years amongst them (1972-2011).  She was a devout, church-going Catholic who regularly donated to those she felt less privileged than herself. Her loss is profound but her love will be eternally felt through the family she leaves behind.

Augustine is survived by her loving husband, Joseph; her children – David, Elvis (Tammi), Dennis (Joan), Pierre (Theresa), Roger, Yvette (Stephen) Riou, Micheline (Dan) Savard; her grandchildren – David Jr., Dominique, Patricia, Devon, Mason, Jamie, Amanda, Heather, Madison; her great-grandchildren – Jasmine, Ashton, Jaxon, Callie, Chenelle, Clara, Gloria, Rylan, Kesley, Mabel, and Henry.

Along with her parents, Augustine was predeceased by her siblings – Rita (her twin sister), Mae, Frank, Bill, Doreen, and Mary. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

The family will hold a private funeral service at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary. Donations in Augustine’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.
