Austin Pyke

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Austin Henry Pyke, age 89, on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Austin worked at Sears for thirty-five plus years. Austin, more commonly known as Poppy, Dos or Aussie to many, was born in North Sydney on March 15, 1933, to Henry and Christine Pyke who predeceased him. He grew up in a large family with twelve (12) siblings. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many hours in his boat with his brothers or with one or more of his many close friends. Austin could often be found enjoying a coffee, working in his garage, or driving the back roads of Cape Breton Island.
Austin is survived by his loving son, Gary (Debbie), two grandchildren Leanne (Gabriel), Halifax, Corey (Lauren), Dartmouth, three great grandchildren; Maria, Inez, and Austin, three brothers, Milton, Harvey (Marian) and Henry (Carol), Ontario, and sisters, Gertie (Ritchie) Aylward, Millie (Cecil) Moores, Ontario, and Polly (Ron) Hosking, North Sydney, sisters-in-law; Edna Pyke, Lilly Pyke, and Ruth Slade. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Sheila, son Frank Dennis, brothers Frank, Ray, Leroy and Peter and sisters Shirley Pentecost and Ena Maria Summerton.
A very special thank you to his sister Polly Hosking and niece Yvonne Bailey whose continued support helped him more than they can ever realize. Also, a special thank you to close friends Jennifer Cleary, Wanda McCready and Linda York who helped dad with whatever he needed from the grocery shopping to yard maintenance and many doctor visits. The family would also like to thank the Medical Staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and support for both Austin and the family.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Thursday April 7, 2022, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney, immediately followed by a funeral service in the Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Frank Unger officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Sydney SDA Church, Bags of Love.
