Capt. Matthew Aikens, CD Obituary

Capt. Matthew James Aikens

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Matthew James Aikens, age 35, after a brief illness, on Thursday June 11, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in North Sydney, November 14, 1984, Matthew was the son of James and Marguerite (McKinnon) Aikens of Upper Leitches Creek, NS.

Matthew dedicated his life to the youth in his community in his role as a teacher, coach, mentor, and a member of the Cadet Instructors Cadre. He was an avid sports fan who had an in-depth knowledge of statistics across many sports but always rooting for the Toronto Raptors, Jays and Leaf’s. Matthew earned his Bachelor of Arts Community Studies from Cape Breton University and followed with his Bachelor of Education degree at University of New Brunswick. He coached many elementary school basketball teams; he was a proud alumni of 562 Cabot RCACS; was the former commanding officer of 591 Dunlop RCACS and continued to be a respected leader for many cadets and officers throughout his involvement.

A warm, kind-hearted, gentle soul, he will be forever missed by his loving parents James and Marguerite; beloved fiancé Leigh MacDonald and his step-children Lillian MacDonald and Reilly Knox, of whom he was so proud. Also left to mourn are his three sisters Jennifer; Karen (John Choy); Heather (Matt Hyland) nieces Ava, Olivia and Julia and nephew Henry; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Matthew was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Roderick and Kathleen Aikens, maternal grandparents Wilfred and Penny McKinnon, an uncle Joseph McKinnon.

Due to covid-19 restrictions there will be no visitation. A private service will take place for immediate family only; a celebration of life will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com .
