We, the family of our sister, aunt and sister-in-law, regret to announce the passing of Carol Zona Norman, on June 7, 2025, at Miners’ Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines, NS, following a lengthy illness.
Carol was born on June 18, 1937, in North Sydney. She was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Stella (Evans) Hickey. Joseph was a former Chief of Police in North Sydney for many years.
Carol attended Thompson High School and worked within the town for many years. She worked at the British-Canadian Co-Op, Metropolitan Store, Herald Stationary and for 29 years at the Owl Drug Store prior to its closing.
Carol was an active and very dedicated member of St. John’s Anglican Church, North Sydney. She was a member of the Altar Guild, and also spent many hours volunteering and helping with suppers and other church events. Carol loved to bake and often shared her culinary achievements with the church, friends and many neighbors. Carol and her late husband Reg also loved camping and made many friends during the 45 plus years they spent their summers in Englishtown and Whycocomagh.
Besides her parents, Carol was predeceased by her husband, Reg; daughter: Regina, who died in infancy; brothers: Raymond, Vern, Jim, Louis and Don; sisters: Belle Musgrave, Anne Miles, Dorothy MacPhee, June Baglieri, Mildred Tobin, Flora Harper and Sandra Sellars.
Carol is survived by her brother, Myrle Hickey in London, Ontario. She is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews, most especially Deborah (Walter) Demone, as well as many close friends and special neighbors, most notably Judy Gouthro-Snow, Kaye Hayes, Daniel McKeough and Erma Carmichael.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will take place from 6-9 pm, Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at 2 pm at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations can be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican church.
