Cassie MacLeod Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Virgina Cassie MacLeod on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at the Northside General Hospital at the age of 89. Born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Jessie (Munden) LeMoine.

Cassie left her home in Newfoundland as a young woman to go to work in Ontario. It was there that she met the love of her life, her husband of almost 70 years (whom she lost just over a year ago), Cecil. After marrying in Ontario, they returned to Cape Breton to settle down and raise their emerging family. Over the years, Cassie worked at a few different jobs, which included the Canada Post Office in North Sydney, The Metropolitan store on Commercial St., and finally managing the Jean Gallery shop in the North Sydney Mall for many years.

Cassie’s true passion was art. She was a talented oil painter who created many works and also taught painting classes in her home with great participation. She loved painting and she loved being able to share her knowledge and skills with all of her students. Many of her paintings hang in local homes to this day. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Cassie is survived by her daughters – Sandra (Morrison) of Sydney and Denise (Craig) of Sarasota Fl; her 5 grandchildren – Adrianna in Vancouver, Daniel in New Brunswick, Jessica in North Sydney, and Nicole and Erika in Halifax; 2 great-grandchildren, – Olivia and Rhett and step great-grandchild, Dalton. She is also survived by her sisters – Hazel in Labrador, and Ruby in Catalone, along with her brother, Wilfred in Rose Blanche.

Besides her parents, Cassie was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, Cecil MacLeod; her infant daughter, Sharon Ann; siblings Gerald, Ken, Nathan and Bethania, all of Newfoundland.

Cassie was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney and was involved for many years with the Mother’s Union. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Debbie Fice and the ladies of the church for their hospital visits and the beautiful communion service they provided before Cassie’s passing.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Alex Wawer, Dr. Eugene Ignatio, and the wonderful nurses and staff on 4 West of the Northside General Hospital, especially granddaughter-in-law Nicole (Nik), CNA, for taking such excellent care of mom while she was in hospital. The family is also very grateful to Diane Rose, Cassie’s faithful caregiver at home for the past two years. Far more than a caregiver but a confidant and a friend, Diane was like a member of the family. Special mention must also be made to her weekend caregiver Angie Hooper, and her dedicated housekeeper Phyllis Collins.

A visitation for Cassie will be held from 2-5pm on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney. Burial will follow at a later date. Donations in Cassie’s name can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund or to St. John the Baptist Church. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary.
