It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Linda Penny - beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend - on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional hospital at the age of 64.

Born in North Sydney on August 2, 1958, Catherine was the daughter of the late Mansell and Elizabeth (Morrison) Penny. Catherine worked for many years as a sales clerk in different establishments around North Sydney – most notably the old movie theatre and the formerly named Stubbert’s Dairy (now Pierce Street Dairy). Catherine was an avid dart and bingo player. She loved watching wrestling and she loved going to hockey games, especially to cheer on her nephew Aiden. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney.

Catherine is survived by her daughter Stacey; her two grandchildren, whom she adored, Kendall and Zakkery, as well as their father, Terry; her brother Blaine (Lynn) Penny and her sister Patsy Penny; her aunt Paula (Dave) Jessome; her special nephew Aiden (Micayla) and her step nephew Mark, along with many cousins whom she cherished over the years.

Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her brother Billy Penny; her grandparents Howard and Katie Morrison as well as Bill and Annie Penny; her former partner David “Archie” Ivey, along with many aunts and uncles.

There will be a visitation for Catherine from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St. North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, at St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Catherine’s name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
