Surrounded by his loving family, it is with heavy hearts, but with appreciation for a life well lived, that the family of Charles Peter Sampson, loving and devoted husband of Bernice (Lewis) Sampson, announces his passing which occurred on Sunday, January 26,2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, NS on September 24, 1925 he was the son of the late Albert and Angelique (Avery) Sampson. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings Paul Sampson, Aileen Sampson Teletchia, uncle and aunt Colin and Mary MacDonald and extended MacDonald family Ed, Lloyd, Colin, Raymond, Cyril, Russell, Kay and Tina; and son-in-law Manuel Swan.
Although he was born in Sydney, he was raised in Saint Pierre et Miquelon. He moved back to Cape Breton at the age of 16. He met the love of his life Bernice Lewis and was married in August of 1949. He took pride in his work and was employed with several construction companies, he retired as a proud steel tyer with the Joneljim Construction Company. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed Sunday drives, stopping at his favorite fishing spots and listening to Celtic Serenade. Charlie was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife of 71 years, Bernice, he is survived by his children Mary MacFarlane (Robert), North Sydney, Charles “Chas” Sampson (Carolyn), Bras d’Or, Joyce Swann, Sydney, Pierre Sampson (Delores), Frenchvale, Paul Sampson (Lois), Halifax, Alan Sampson (Wendy), Sydney Mines, Michelle Sampson (Gary), North Sydney, Bill Sampson (Paul), Saint John, NB, and Ron Sampson (Wendy), Halifax; 17 cherished grandchildren; and several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the compassionate care of Dr. Peter Poulos and the doctors and nurses at the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Visitation for Charlie will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Charlie may be made to the North Sydney Food Bank or a charity of choice.
