Cyril Cross Obituary

Cyril Cross

North Sydney

The family of Cyril Cross, North Sydney, announces his peaceful passing on Friday, November, 3, 2023 at the beautiful age of 100.

Born in Badgers Quay, Newfoundland on March 31,1923 to Darius and Flora Cross, Cyril is survived by son David Cross, daughter Shirley Chambers and daughter Linda (Malcolm) MacMillan with whom he resided during the past eight years.  He is also survived by his loving grandchildren Kevin Chambers (Alana), Tanya Chambers, Jeffrey Cross (Nadia), Timothy Cross (Dallas), Michael Cross (Ashley) and Matthew MacMillan (Cheryl).   He will also be missed by great grandchildren Lawson MacLennan and Landon Chambers, Kennedy and London Cross, Ryleigh and Logan Cross, Lark Cross, and Maddox MacMillan. Cyril is also survived by brother Frank Stratton (Mary).  In 2017, he was predeceased by Louise Cross, his beautiful and loving wife of 71 years. In addition to being predeceased by his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother Edgar Cross, sister Myrtle Starks, step-father Absalom Stratton, and daughter-in-law Cheryl Cross.

Cyril was First Mate on the SS Baccalieu for many years, and served with CN Marine, then Marine Atlantic. He retired in 1985 from Marine Atlantic as Operations Supervisor with 44 years of dedicated service.  At 100 years of age, he found great humour in the fact that he had been receiving pension longer than most peoples’ careers.

Cyril was a quiet man by nature, and a true gentleman.  He was an avid reader, loved to watch sports and politics on TV, and enjoyed family gatherings on holidays for many years in the family home on May Street.  He will be dearly missed by his family.

According to Cyril's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation or church service.  A private family memorial and burial will be held at a later time under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick O’Grady, the Palliative Care Team (especially Julia) and VON for enabling Cyril to remain at home for his final days.  Acts of kindness are encouraged and appreciated.

Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.

Rest easy, Dear Poppy.  “A long life well-lived, a job well done.”
