It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Joseph (Danny) O’Handley, age 81, of Georges River on Friday April 1, 2022 at the Northside General Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. 

Born in Little Bras d’Or on March 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Catherine O’Handley.  He worked in the automotive trade for over 50 years with a focus on Volkswagen vehicles. He was also a fan of traditional Cape Breton, Irish and Scottish music.

He will be missed by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy O’Handley (Hood) and their children, Steven (Kelly) O’Handley, Guysborough, Maureen (Arnold) O’Handley-MacLeod, Georges River and Liam O’Handley, Grande Prairie. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Breanna (Arwen) and Brent O’Handley, Marianna and Colin MacLeod as well as Ashley Dautbegovic and Kalen MacLeod and their families, Tyler, Ryan and Kaitlyn O’Handley and their mother Eva. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Lou (Darryl) Jessome, Joan Lewis and Vida Hood and their families. He is also survived by his dear cousins, Edie Reid and Greta MacKenzie and his chosen family,Gordon Johnston and by Aeris MacMillan and her family.  Dad was very privileged to have many wonderful friends throughout his life. He is survived by close friends; Billy Pero, Tom MacInnis, Dave Oake, Darrell Keigan, Ellard MacKenzie, John Walsh and Dennis Allen.

He was predeceased by his chosen family Wilbert and David Johnston and their mother, Annabel who were a very special part of his life as well as his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Mary Hood and brothers-in-law, Bill Lewis and Bill Hood.

Much appreciation and thanks are extended to Dr. Peter Poulos for all his care and compassion over the years as well as Dr. Wissam Saliba and all the nurses at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Thanks as well to Dr. Alexander Wawer and the wonderful nurses on 4 West at Northside General Hospital, Palliative Care and the VON for your dedicated service. Much gratitude is also extended to family and friends who have been so supportive throughout the years.

As per Dad’s request, there will be no visitation. A private family service will take place at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
