Big Bras d’Or

It is with broken hearts that the family announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend David MacDonald, at the age of 54, on Saturday September 16, 2023 with the love of his life Lisa by his side, at Hospice Cape Breton.   

Born in Big Bras d’Or on March 11, 1969, he was the son of the late Carol and Nelson MacDonald.  David worked in the trucking business for 35 years with many wonderful companies in Cape Breton and Grande Prairie, AB.  David also ran his own trucking company for a few years in Grande Prairie before moving home to Cape Breton in 2019.  After moving home, David also went lobster fishing beside his best friend Brian Timmins for a season.  David was blessed with the most wonderful amazing friends who meant the world to him. He appreciated every phone call, visit and everything his friends have done for him during his battle with pancreatic cancer - he loved you all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wawer’s office, especially Brenda for all her help. Also, the Palliative Care staff, appreciating the exceptional home care given by Dr. George Burns and nurse Julia Penny, as well as volunteers and staff at Hospice Cape Breton, with special mention to nurses Lenore and Catherine.  

David is survived by his wife Lisa LeBlanc, brothers Clayton and Scott (Pam); his children Jacob (April), Kelsey (Brandon), Rebecca (Colin) and Ariel; his grandchildren Charlie, Ezekiel, Xena and Sheldon; his uncle Jack; aunts Mary Lou, Alice and Freda; nieces, nephews, and cousins; special cousin Katherine (Jack) Allen; sister-in-law Lori; brothers-in-law Ken (Shelly) and Mitch (Hannah) and mother-in-law Sally.

Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his brother Darrell; grandparents David and Gladys, Neil and Jessie Anne; uncles John, Rene, Harold and Bob, son-in-law Chad and father-in-law Brosie.

Visitation for David will be held between 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Thursday September 21, 2023 at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 22, 2023 at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d'Or with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery immediately following the service.  A reception will be held following the service at the Big Bras d’Or Fire Hall. 

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society or St. James Cemetery or charity of your choice.
