Derrick Fraser Obituary

Derrick Fraser

Point Aconi

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father, husband, brother and friend, Derrick Eugene Fraser, age 62, on Sunday, June 14, 2020.

Born in North Sydney on September 9, 1957, he was the son of the late Simon and Viola (Burton) Fraser.

Left to mourn are his son Simon, his wife Shelly, brother Simon (Bernice), all of North Sydney; sisters, Eleanor, Baddeck, Mina, Marilyn (Jim) and Ginny (Pat), all of Point Aconi, Judy (Ed), Lawrencetown, NS. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Carmen, Ontario, Brenda and Noelle of North Sydney, as well as his good friends and in-laws Wanda and Brian McGean.

Besides his parents Simon and Viola, he was predeceased by a brother George, a sister Shirley and brothers-in-law, Jacob Shaw, Lawrence MacLellan and Frank Cahill.

Derrick lived his whole life in Point Aconi with a brief time spent working in Calgary. He had a great work ethic which started as a young man with his father in the woods. Later with John D. Steeles, CN Marine, carpentry work with the Lavery brothers and then many years fishing with his brother-in-law, Jim Broderick, until his failing health forced him to retire.

He was a “Mr. Fix-it” and was willing to tackle anything with his “never say never” attitude. Derrick’s lack of education was made up for in his natural ability with woodworking. His nautical theme pieces were sought after and admired at our local Farmers Market.

Derrick was a known story teller and mimic and was very entertaining. He was quite outgoing and enjoyed meeting people, especially the older fisherman and listening to their stories. In healthier years, he loved to hunt and walk in the woods.

In keeping with Derrick’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside committal service will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.

Memorial donations may be made to the NS Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com
