With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Don Fiander at the age of 94. He leaves behind his two daughters – Belinda Finney and Paula Fiander, along with their respective families.
Everything Don did, he did well: from building his homes, building two local businesses (Don Ray Lumber and Mr. Fi’s Framing), and growing a family. He poured hard work and ingenuity into everything he did.
Don had a passion for the outdoors: fly-fishing all over Cape Breton and Newfoundland, hunting and camping. Don was an avid builder, craftsman and photographer. He was president of the Sprigs of Heather Pipe Band, member of North Sydney Downtown Improvement, a committee member of St. John’s the Baptist Anglican Church, a member of Big Brothers of Canada, and a member of many fund-raising committees within the community.
Don and his wife, Babe, had a great capacity for hospitality and openly welcomed family, friends, and newcomers into their home. His love for Babe and his beautiful daughters, Belinda and Paula, as well as his special, much-loved relationship with his grandson, Jordan, will be forever in our hearts.
A graveside service will take place at a later date. Donations in Don’s memory can be made to Hospice Cape Breton. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
