It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Jean Bungay, age 90, on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at The Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney on June 7, 1935, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Rachel (Gale) Parker (nee Weeks) and Arthur Gale. At the age of 11, she moved from North Sydney to Montreal where she continued to reside until her marriage.
Dorothy was employed at L.A. Steele Ford Dealership for many years before beginning to work at The Book Room, a Christian bookstore in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church where she was a long-time member.
Dorothy loved being part of her church family. She enjoyed music and was a member of the choir and was also involved in “Mother’s Union” where she had many good friends.
She liked flowers and gardening and was a life-time member of the North Sydney Garden Club.
Mom was a creative person and, even though a stroke in 2009 had taken away the use of her right hand, was an avid artist who courageously resumed painting with her left hand. We are so proud of her.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Susan Johnstone, Georges River, her son Stephen (Jacqueline) Bungay, Barrie, Ontario and her three grandsons: Benjamin Johnstone, Georges River, Jonathan Johnstone, Vancouver and Peter Johnstone, Edmonton. She is also survived by half siblings, Christine Harrison (nee Gale), Anita Stern (nee Gale), Arthur Gale, Thomas/Gershom (Dinah) Gale, sister-in-law Alice Bungay, cousin and former sister-in-law Jean Bungay, half sister-in-law Deanna Price and half brother-in-law James Eggen, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Clayton Bungay, half-sister Jacklynn Eggen (nee Parker), half-brother John Parker, step-mother Mary Gale, step-father John Parker and Son-in-law Stewart Johnstone. She was also predeceased by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and some cousins and nieces.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for their exceptional care of Dorothy. We are deeply grateful. Thank you also to Dr. Alex Wawer, nurse practitioner Alice Rogers and the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care team for their compassionate support.
A funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
