Dorothy "Dot" (MacSween) MacLeod Obituary

Dorothy “Dot” (MacSween) MacLeod

Baddeck/North Sydney

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy Joan “Dot” (MacSween) MacLeod, age 84, beloved mother, sister and aunt, on Monday, January 23, 2023 at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck where she was a resident for the last three years.

Born in North Sydney on April 27, 1938, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Gordon and Isabela “Belle” (Keeping) Greene.  “Dot” as she was known to most people, was an elementary school teacher who taught at Fairview, Park Street and Seton Schools, retiring in 1994.

She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in North Sydney where she sang in the church choir, a member of the Ladies Guild and a leader with the Pioneer Youth Group.

Dot was blessed with many years on the Bras d’or Lakes with her beloved J.B., aboard the “Forever Young” making many fond memories and passing on their love of sailing to Nancy.  After J.B.’s untimely passing, Dot became fiercely independent and transitioned from sailor to a dedicated camper. She spent twenty-five fun-filled years at MacLeod’s Campground in Dunvegan with family and friends, taking part in the 4 p.m. “Happy Hour” and playing cards with her sisters till late in the evening.

Dot was known to be a graceful skater and accomplished seamstress, two hobbies that she was able to enjoy for many years. She was a seasoned traveller, with her adventures taking her around the Maritimes, trips to Florida and Europe, not to mention her unforgettable bus tours to see Daniel O’Donnell.

Dot’s diagnosis with dementia would slow her down but her feisty spirit came through from time to time as a gentle reminder that she was still in there. Her journey would eventually lead her to Alderwood in Baddeck where she would be lovingly cared for by her A-team of caregivers too numerous to mention. Your love and kindness will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy MacSween (Paul), Sydney, her brother Ken (Louise) Greene, sister Anne (Sandy) Jackson, both of North Sydney, her brother-in-law Fred Young; nieces and nephews Carol Mercer, Lori Jackson, Kelli Jackson, Lindsay Andrea, Mark Greene, Shirley Campbell, Ron MacSween, Dan MacSween.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband John B. MacSween, her second husband Gordon MacLeod, her sisters Eileen (Don) Ward and Eleanor Young.

Visitation for Dorothy will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney with Rev. John Hannem officiating.  Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney in the spring.  Memorial donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home, Calvary Baptist Church or a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
