Dr. Michael "Mick" Igoe Obituary

Dr. Michael "Mick" Patrick Igoe, born in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland, passed away peacefully on August 28th at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by family and friends. He was the beloved son of the late Dr. John Joseph Igoe and Maureen Igoe (née McCabe). His siblings—Sinead (late Allan), Derry (late Hugh), the late John (Barbara), Michelle (Tony), and Anne (Tom)—remained close to his heart throughout his life.

From an early age Michael was captivated by the idea of the North, inspired by stories of its vast landscapes and unique lifestyle. This led him to pursue an Internal Medicine residency in Kingston, Ontario, after graduating from Galway Medical School. There, he met his wife, Elaine Igoe (née Gauthier). Together, they moved to Yellowknife, where they welcomed four children: Sinead (Kevin Pyke), John (Thera) Igoe, Derry (Dan Tetzlaff), and Michael (Beth) Igoe. After more than a decade in Yellowknife, they settled in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where Michael found a place reminiscent of Ireland with its rich culture, warm people, and Celtic scenery.

A proud "Mayo man," Michael loved to cheer on the Mayo sports team. He was also an avid golfer who cherished the camaraderie of the 19th hole. A true Irishman, Michael’s life was defined by his passion for medicine, love of literature, and devotion to family, friends, and patients. Known for his intellect and deep appreciation for the written word, he often recited poems and shared stories with a twinkle in his eye and a pint in hand. He was a devoted father and cherished grandfather, affectionately known as "Pepere" by his seven grandchildren: Aurora, Regan, Avery, Clare, Bridget, Ronan, and Mikey.

Dr. Igoe will be remembered for his compassionate care, love of storytelling, and dedication to his patients, family, and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.

The family wish to thank the staff at the Northside General Hospital and the Northside Community Guest Home for the great care they provided.
