Edmund "Ed" Lawless Obituary

Edmund “Ed” Lawless

Sydney Mines

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edmund Mark “Ed” Lawless, Friday, June 13, 2025, at the age of 91, at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck. Ed was a cherished educator, coach, and community member, who touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit.

Born on August 30, 1933, in Flowers Cove, Newfoundland, to the late Thomas and Georgina (Chambers) Lawless.

Throughout his career as a gym teacher, Ed inspired generations of students and future teachers with his passion for teaching and his love of sports. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others, encouraging them to grow, achieve, and believe in themselves—both on and off the field.

Family was the cornerstone of Ed’s life. He was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle, and his love for his family was evident in everything he did. To Ed, family wasn’t just important—it was everything. He carried their joys and burdens as his own, and his love was the thread that bound us together. Ed was also known for his generous heart, always willing to lend a hand or support a cause close to his heart. Over the years, he quietly contributed to many organizations and initiatives, never seeking recognition—only hoping to make a difference.

A familiar and beloved figure in the community, Ed was known for his kind spirit and easy smile. In his earlier years, he could often be found walking the streets of North Sydney, offering a wave, or stopping for a chat. He spent countless joyful hours at the Old North Sydney Rink, a place filled with memories and friendships. A proud and dedicated member of the North Sydney Yacht Club, Ed found peace and purpose on the water—especially when sailing alongside his cherished brothers, Mick and Gerald. Even when walking was no longer possible, Ed became a daily fixture at Platinum Fitness, where he continued to connect with others and stay active with the same eagerness to support others and sense of community that defined his life.

Ed was a man of deep faith and a long-time member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney. His life was a testament to the values he held dear: compassion, dedication, and humility.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness and service will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Family was the heart of Ed’s world, and he was deeply cherished in return. He is survived by his children, who were the pride of his life: Kenny Lawless (Judy), Nancy Lawless, Shawn (Tanya) Lawless, Darren Lawless, and Kerry Lawless (Scott). He leaves behind his beloved siblings: Gerald (Mary) Lawless, Mary (Harry) Katrynuk, Linda (Daryl) Rendell, Renee (Mark) Romanowsky, Mick (Bonnie) Lawless, Tish Lawless, and Sue (Kenny) Leblanc—each of whom held a special place in his heart. Ed was a devoted grandfather to Brittany, Leanne (Jordan), Jordan (Brad), Jamie (Brian), Logan, Karley, and Darcey, and a loving great-grandfather to Nash and Weston. His legacy of kindness and connection will live on in the many nieces and nephews who adored him, and in the countless lives he touched simply by being Ed.

Ed was predeceased by his loving parents; the mother of his children and a significant part of his life story, Bernette Bowne, with whom he shared a lasting bond through their family; and his dear sisters: Jean Farrell, Susan Howley, Elizabeth, and Marina. Their memories remained close to his heart, and he carried their love with him always.

As a family we would like to thank the staff at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck for the care given to our dad over the last year. A special thank you is also extended to Sandra Jackson for the love and care she had shown Ed. Donations can be made to St. Joseph Church Hall Fund, North Sydney in memory of Ed.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
