It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Edward Vincent Matthews, aged 73, on March 9, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on August 17, 1952, he was the son of the late Vincent Matthews and Pearl Boutilier. Ed received his early education at the Cape Breton Vocational School and went on to work at the Lingan Powerplant and then at the Halifax Dockyards, before finishing his career as an engineer on the boats of the Great Lakes. In his free-time he enjoyed fishing as well as sitting in his chair watching Blues Jays baseball and NFL football on Sundays.
Ed is survived by his sisters: Shirley Debison, Sydney, Ethel (John) Gillis, Sydney Mines, Martha (Eddie) Russell, Millville, Rita (Neil) MacMullin, Sydney Mines, Alice Matthews (Brian), BC, Ellen Matthews (Shaun), Westmount, and by brother, Carl Matthews, Alberta, sister-in-law, Debbie Matthews, New Glascow, and brother-in-law, Robert Debison, Leitches Creek, as well as Nancy and her family in St. Catherines, Ontario. He is further survived by a large number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and numerous cousins. He will also be missed and fondly remembered by his best friends, Kevin and Liz MacMullin, Jake Buffett, and numerous others who knew him.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Ernie; niece Jo Ellen Gillis, and nephew, Skylar Matthews.
Special thanks are extended to the nurses, doctors, and paramedics at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
There will be no service at this time, but a private family celebration will take place at a later date. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page.
