We regret to announce the passing of Eleanor (Matthews) Thomas, who died on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Hospice Cape Breton, at the age of 85.

Born October 1, 1940, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Melvin and Mabel (Sallons) Matthews.

Eleanor enjoyed making people laugh and spending time with her family. She was a creative person who was always busy with crafting, knitting and needlework. She had a passion for gardening and took personal enjoyment in her work. Eleanor enjoyed Christmas where she gave gifts to others all year round. She will be missed but never forgotten.

Eleanor is survived by her sons David, Lloyd and Bill Dawe; daughters Judy (Austin), Mary, Irene and Janie Lee Dawe; brothers Gordie and Donnie Matthews, and Larry Villneff; step-daughter Judy Muise.  She is also survived by many grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by husbands William Dawe, James W. Thomas and Gilbert MacCrae; her daughter Barbara Dawe; step children David Thomas and Linda Whalen; brothers Kenny and Tom Matthews.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
