It is with heartbreaking sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Elizabeth Virtue “Betty” Hodder on May 19, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Marystown, NL, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Gladys (Scott) Mayo.
A proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, family was absolutely paramount in Betty’s life. She worked hard and sacrificed greatly to give all that she could to her children. Her family was her world, and the loving home she fostered created a lifetime of cherished memories.
Betty was a devoted parishioner and volunteer of the St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. She worked in her early years, before her children were born, as a switchboard operator and at the Marystown fish plant. In later years she worked at the North Star Inn as a housekeeper, with the CEIP program, and then continued to do personal housekeeping.
Betty is survived by her daughters – Paula (Vaughn), Valerie (Blair), and Dianne Power; grandchildren – Kathleen, Kenneth (Kynisha), Brooke, Megan, Colin Jr., Kurt, and Florence; great-grandchildren – Thomas, Madison, Winston, Lennon; siblings – Ernest Mayo and Susan MacKinley, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and her special feline friend, Tigger.
Betty was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Levi Hodder; her sons, Winston and Colin; grandchildren – Horgan, Morgan, and Skye; brothers – Melvin, Kennth, and Rendall.
A funeral service for Betty will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the St. John The Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating. A burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery with a reception following. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page.
