It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Emma Catherine Merritt, aged 87, on Monday May 16, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, Emma was the daughter of the late Alexander and Ann (MacLean) Burchell. Emma worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant with Nova Scotia Department of Health. She was a member of Holy Family Parish in Sydney Mines.
Emma is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Merritt; her sister, Joan (Eugene) Swartzack of Antigonish; her brother-in-law, Gerry MacLean; her sister-in-law Delores Tobin, Ontario, nephews: Joseph, Robin, and Andrew; nieces: Mary, Eunice, Kay, Holly, Leanne, Angela, and Tara, also by nephews; Jim and David, nieces; Marilyn, Juliette and Denise.
Besides her parents, Emma was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth (Leonard) Arsenault and Ann MacLean.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Sydney Mines. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J.
