Evelyn Devison Obituary

Evelyn Anne Devison

North Sydney

It is with profound sadness that our family announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Evelyn Devison, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the age of 80.

Born in Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland, on July 22, 1943, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Davidson) Hayward.

Evelyn was a devoted wife to the love of her life, her late husband John.  She dedicated her life to her daughters and son, and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her other passion was her work, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Harbourview Hospital in Sydney Mines for many years, well past her retirement.  Evelyn will be remembered as a kind, compassionate, and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor, who made a difference in the lives of so many. Her legacy of love and service will live on through her friends and family and the countless patients whose lives she touched during her career as a nurse.

Evelyn and her late husband John loved to spend time in their younger years camping with family and spent many summers in Ingonish. They both loved to travel and usually had family surrounding them. Evelyn always talked about seeing her place of birth and in 2016 was fortunate to visit Scotland.

She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, and a member of the Mary Unit of the United Church Women (UCW) for many years.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters Kathy (Hugh John) Chisholm, Pamela (Doug) MacLeod and her son John (Monica Maletz).  She is also survived by her grandchildren Caitlin, Lindsey, Alex, Garrett, Shelby, Kylea, Maxwell and Nicholas, and her great-grandchildren Piper and Benjamin. Her in-laws; Emily Smith, Henry (Patricia) Devison, Mary (Don) Hood, Barbara (Ron) Bullen, Richard Devison (Michelle), Christina Hayward (Graham).

Besides her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by her husband John; granddaughter Andrea; brothers Graham, Brian and Calvin Hayward and infant sister Dorothy; father and mother-in-law Clarence and Elizabeth Devison; brother-in-law Norman Smith.

A visitation for Evelyn will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday July 28, 2024, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday July 29th at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Leitches Creek with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Burial immediately following in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.  A reception for Evelyn will be held in the church hall following the graveside committal.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church. Online condolences can be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
