It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Gary Merritt, age 68, on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on March 1, 1955 to the late Michael and Winnie (Hoadley) Merritt. Gary grew up on Forbes Avenue, North Sydney until moving to Crescent Street in Sydney Mines. He spent a few years working in Fort McMurray living with his son, until returning back to his home on Guy Street, Sydney Mines. Gary, aka “Senior” to some, could be found at any location during the crack of dawn with a cup of coffee and smoke in hand waiting for a good conversation. Muscle cars, motorcycles and good music would have him talking endlessly.
Gary is survived by his son Gary (Kristen), his daughter Carrie-Lynn and his wife Barb (Gardiner). Also surviving are his grandchildren Destiney, Taylor, Riley and Rosco.
A funeral service for Gary will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
