George MacKenzie Obituary

George MacKenzie

North Sydney

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother-in-law, George MacKenzie, age 100, on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care nursing home in Sydney.

Born in North Sydney, on April 18, 1921, George was the son of the late Daniel and Marion (Appleby) MacKenzie. George grew up on Beech Street in North Sydney. After finishing school he worked as an accountant for Maritime Leathers and Crowell's department store. In 1954 he began his career with the finance department at CBC radio in Sydney. In 1957 he transferred to the Halifax office and remained there until he retired in 1985 and returned to his beloved Cape Breton. He was an elder at Bethany United Church in Halifax and St. Matthew-Wesley United Church in North Sydney where he also "did the books".

George is survived by his son David (Terry), granddaughters Kristin (Anthon) Jensen and Kathryn, and great-grandchildren Sadie, Kai and Lucy Jensen. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Mae MacKenzie, Mildred Laidlaw and Gladys MacKenzie and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (Laidlaw) MacKenzie, brothers John “Jackie”, Gordon, Chalmers and Gilmour MacKenzie, sisters Mildred Jackson and Ethel Anderson, brothers-in-law Keith Jackson, Elliott Anderson, Wilfred Ferguson and Leslie Reid and sisters-in-law Eleanor MacKenzie, Freda Ferguson and Bertha Reid.

A special thank you from the family to the staff at Soldiers Cove for their compassion and kindness over the years.
