It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of George Wayne Gouthro of Balls Creek, on Sunday, April 5, 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 79.

Born in Sydney on May 17, 1946, Wayne was the son of the late Neil and Elizabeth (MacInnis) Gouthro.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Claudia of nearly 56 years; son Jamie (Summer) and grandson Jagger. Besides his parents, Wayne was also predeceased by his step-father Joseph MacIssac.

Wayne and Claudia were married on July 18, 1970 and had a son Jamie who is their pride and joy. Wayne worked for some years at Sydney Steel Plant and later for Marine Atlantic, B&B Department where he retired after many years of service. He was an avid softball player and was a member of the Point Edward Juniors when they won the Maritime Softball Championship in the late 1960’s. He was an easygoing person. He enjoyed going to dances and spending time with friends. After his retirement he fed many eagles on Sundays, which he really enjoyed. Many would refer to Wayne as the “eagle man”. Wayne also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

The family really appreciated the professional and kind care that was given to Wayne by staff and doctors at the Cape Breton Regional and Northside General Hospitals.  The care was second to none.

At Wayne’s request there will be no visitation.  A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.  Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J.
