Died peacefully on Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Nova Scotia, at the age of 78.  Loving husband of Trudy (O'Keefe) and father of Charlene (John), Gretchen (Mark), Catherine (Rick) and Will (Laura).  Grandfather of Daniel, David, Sophia, Abush, Caroline, Alex, Nolan, Lucy, and Julia. 

Born in Toronto on October 14, 1944, he was the son of the late Evelyn (Cooper) and Gerry Fitzgerald.  Brother of Geralyn, Tim and the late Greg.

Bill spent his professional life as a rural general surgeon in St Anthony, NL.  In the past he was President of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2008.  Recently he was Chairman of B.O.L.D. in Baddeck, NS.  He loved his family, his work as a rural general surgeon in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador, and sailing on his Concordia Yawl, Tosca.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service for Bill will be held in St. Anthony, NL, at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 29, at St Mary's Anglican Church.  Reception at B.O.L.D. in Baddeck, NS at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
