It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, Gladys Ashford, age 92, on Monday September 5, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Diamond Cove, Newfoundland on April 2, 1930, Gladys was the daughter of the late Fred and Bertha (Cox) Blagdon. She travelled to North Sydney on a long liner at the age of fourteen to help with the care of her sister’s children. Gladys loved attending yard sales and flea markets on weekends. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.

Gladys is survived by her daughters; Pauline (Richard) Carroll, Karen Clarke (Johnny Morrell), sons; Jack (Darlene) Ashford and Donnie Ashford (Donna Smith), daughter-in-law Johanna Ashford, sister; Eileen Keeping, several loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, also by her close friend Nancy MacDonald.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, especially at Joseph Hall, also the staff at the Emergency Department of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the care given to Gladys and the family.

Besides her parents Gladys was predeceased by her husband Russell Ashford, son Garland Ashford, her grandson Jason Ashford, great-grandson Allen Carroll; her sisters Myrtle Rideout, Millie Jessome, Violet Pye, Flora Taylor and Annie Bennett; her brothers George, Freddie, Garland and Leslie Blagdon.

Visitation for Gladys will be held 2-4 and 7-9 pm Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service for Gladys will be held 2 pm Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating.  Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
