Douglas Poole
North Sydney
It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Doug at home on March 1, 2023. He was born in North Sydney to the late Gordon and Ruby (Billard) Poole.
Doug was employed with Marine Atlantic for 40 years, retiring in 1992 as Assistant Terminal Manager. For several years he was involved with the Marine Atlantic Pensioner’s Society. He was a former member of the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Dept. He enjoyed his time spent in Middle River with his fishing and hunting buddies. The deer had no fear of him, he only went to do the cooking. In his younger years he was involved in the scouting movement and was proud to be a Queen Scout and able to attend the World Boy Scout Jamboree in 1955 in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
He was a life-long member of St. John The Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce (Devoe), and his children Jamie (Nicole) and daughter Nancy (Blaise) Kelly; grandchildren Sio and Seamus Poole and Oliver and Lachlan Kelly. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Angie MacNeil, Brenda Sexton, Mabel (Gerald) D'Eon, Lorraine (Gerard) Doyle, Jane (Gary) McNeil; brother-in-law Brian (Jane) Devoe and Jim McGrath. Also, his niece Sheila Perri, nephews Jonathan and Scott Fleming, as well as many Devoe nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Doug was predeceased by his sister Eva (Duncan) Fleming, father and mother-in-law Harry and Florence Devoe, sister-in-law Beverly McGrath, brothers-in-law Kevin Devoe, Glen Sexton, Jack MacNeil, and nephew Leigh Fleming.
The family would like to thank the wonderful team at the Renal Dialysis clinic at Northside General Hospital.
Dad will be missed by his many life-long friends, as well as all his friends around town. He loved to be out and about visiting, telling stories, and scrounging for bargains. Although his stories could be long winded, we will miss those the most. We love you Dad.
A funeral service for Doug will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 4th at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Memorial donations in Doug’s name may be made to the renal dialysis unit of the Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
Lord. Thou knows how I lived;
All I’ve done amiss, forgive,
All the good I’ve tried to do,
Strengthen, bless and carry through.
All I love in safety keep
While in Thee I fall asleep
