Gwendolyn Day Obituary

Gwendolyn Theresa Day

North Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we, the family announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt, Gwen, age 61, on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Hospice Cape Breton in Membertou.

Born in North Sydney on April 5th, 1961, Gwen was the daughter of Thomas and Ellen (MacMullen) Day.  Gwen enjoyed working a variety of jobs, including hairdressing, court reporting, several call centres and most recently administration support at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.  But by far, the job she most loved was her time spent with Celebration of the Arts, where she met many local artists and musicians.  As an artist herself, she took tremendous pleasure in giving these artists the opportunity to display their talents and share their stories.

Gwen had a strong appreciation for the arts; specializing in colour pencil sketches, she has created many beautiful portraits that are very life like and adorn the walls of proud family members.  She had a way with words and dabbled in story writing; she had an appreciation for photography, motion pictures and music of all genres.  From the early days of mixed cassette tapes to her Music Box group she administered, Gwen had an extraordinary ability to share with those she loved the right song for that moment.  Music was Gwen’s prescription for the heart, soul and spirit.

Gwen enjoyed many summers as a junior golfer at Seaview Golf Club, continuing to golf with family and friends throughout her life.  She also played a little tennis and backyard volley ball, she had a wicked spike when around the net and seldom missed when serving.  But, by far the activity she enjoyed most was walking her dog, her cherished companion, Harley, at Petersfield, especially during the fall colours.  She was in her element when out in Nature, regardless the season and in particular sitting out on her deck surrounded by her trees, various feathered creatures, fox and deer.

Quiet, free spirited and unassuming, Gwen loved to be part of family gatherings and events.  She especially loved staying in touch with her much loved nieces and nephews, always interested in their lives.  Gwen cherished her life-long close friends and appreciated keeping in close contact throughout her journey.  She was instantly endeared to all she met.  She had a delightful sense of humour and thoroughly enjoyed a good belly laugh; always finding, and shining….‘the light’ in any situation.  We will forever desperately miss her shining light.

Gwen is survived by sisters Pat (Alex) Sampson, Shirley (Greg) Tanner, Jennifer Day, all of North Sydney and brothers, Tommy (Carol Anne) Day, Sydney Mines, Kevin Day, North Sydney, Robert (Anne) Day and Greg (Joanne) Day both of Halifax, also her brother-in-law, Ken Lomond of North Sydney. Gwen is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Besides her parents, Thomas and Ellen Day, Gwen was predeceased by brothers Jerome, Gary, Wally, Dennis, Melvin and a brother in infancy, and by her sisters Kimberly and Beverly.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to Dr. Stephanie Langley for her kindness and guidance, Dr. Khodadad and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Center, EHS Paramedics, and Dr. D’Intino, Nurses and all Staff Members at Hospice Cape Breton who welcomed and cared for Gwen, and all of us, as part of their extraordinary family.

By request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.  A private family burial will be held.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Center, Hospice Cape Breton or a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.

…..Hark now, hear the sailors cry

Smell the sea and feel the sky

Let your soul and spirit fly

Into the mystic….Van Morrison
