Harry B. Harbin

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Harry Bernard Harbin, age 92, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, on Friday November 30, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Harry was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on August 29, 1926. He was the son of the late Andrew and Martha (Street) Harbin. Harry was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Marine. He was employed as a chief steward aboard the C.N. Marine vessels until his retirement in 1985 after 43 years of service. He enjoyed a wonderful 33 years of retirement. He was an avid reader, an active member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, a master mason and member of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge and a Past President of the Cape Breton Shriners.
Harry married the love of his life, Ruby (Farrell) in 1949. He was a gentle loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and was the heart of a very large, loving family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Harry is survived by his wife Ruby Harbin, his 10 children Brenda (Jim) Cook, Wayne (Betty) Harbin, Donna (Brian) Smith, Harry (Wanda) Harbin, Judy (Robert) Mahar, Ruby (Pat) Juchli, Edith (William) Penny, Darlene (Michael) Long, Andrew (Beth) Harbin, Jeff Harbin, 24 grandchildren Nicholas, Andrew, Peter, Daniel, Michael, Jennifer, Heather, Adam, Sean, Ian, Rodney, Laura, Billy, Steven, Michael, Jason, Shana, Jordan, Joshua, Tiffany, Mary Beth, Matthew, Hannah and Emily, also by 30 great grandchildren.
Harry was predeceased by a great granddaughter Melissa Elaine, a daughter-in-law Cheryl (MacLean) Harbin, his great-grandson Jack, his sisters Alma, Joyce, Lillian and Georgina, brothers Wilfred, Victor, William and Llewelyn.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. John Kirkpatrick for his many years of care, the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, the staff of 5th floor at the Northside General Hospital, Department of Veterans Affairs and to his care givers Ruth Ivey and Karen Dominey.
Visitation for Harry will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Monday December 3rd, 2018 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A masonic service will be held 6:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A private family service will be held Tuesday.
