Heather Maclean Obituary

Heather Maclean of North Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away on January 9, 2026 in what would have been her 89th year. Born on August 8, 1937 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Heather connected with many people in her lifetime as a daughter, granddaughter, niece, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt, great-grand aunt, friend, volunteer, and educator.

Heather was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax.  She then attended Dalhousie University, graduating from Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick and Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.  She taught at the College of Home Economics at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon as a Dietetic Educator for 25 years and retired to North Sydney where she resided until her death.

Throughout her life she was active in her communities, volunteering as the Chair of the Canadian Dietetics Association and the Sydney Presbytery.  She was a long-time contributing elder and enthusiastic choir member at St. Matthew Wesley United Church in North Sydney-now in Leitches Creek.

During her life, Heather spent considerable time with her brother and sister-in-law, her two nieces, and their extended family including Ross and Margaret (Marshall) Babin and their children, Kate and Joel. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dawn (Marshall) Maclean; nieces, Tracey Warwick (Bill Oakley) and Sarah Livesey (Robert Livesey); great-nieces and nephews, Ryan, Adam, Nora, Ava; and great-grand nephew Logan.

Heather's soul is now surrounded by family and loved ones as she was predeceased by her parents, Russell Kay and Lorna Oxley (Hogg) Maclean; brother, John O.S. Maclean; and honorary niece, Margaret (Marshall) Babin.

A special thank you to her very good friends, Marjorie Serafinus and Heather Jennex for their dedicated support of Heather over the last number of years.  A huge thank you to her neighbours who looked out for Heather and offered many meals, drives, and help.  We sincerely appreciate the care from the staff of the local VON, Sydney Regional Hospital, and the Northside General Hospital- 4 West including the members of the Palliative Care team.

Honouring her long standing wishes, cremation has taken place and a family graveside committal will occur, in Halifax, later in the year.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. We invite family and friends to join us in remembering and celebrating Heather's life by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary or Facebook page. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church in Leitches Creek, NS or the North Sydney Food Bank Society.
