Helen Isabel Bennett
96, Balls Creek
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Helen Isabel (McInnis) Bennett of Balls Creek on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at the Northside General Hospital.
Helen was born on June 4, 1924 to the late George and Margaret (Beaton) McInnis. She grew up on a farm with her parents and seven siblings and was a member of St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek. Helen married her husband Russell Bennett on October 1,1948. Together they built their family home in Balls Creek where they raised their six children, three of which were triplets. Helen and Russell were very fortunate to have the love and support of their family, friends, and neighbours when the triplets arrived. Prior
to this big event, Helen was a mom of three boys, Darrell, Gary, and Vaughn. The birth
of the triplets blessed her with two more boys, Darren and David, and her only daughter,
Denise. Helen spent many hours driving her boys to hockey, going from rink to rink, with
her daughter Denise in tow. In her spare time, she enjoyed gathering with her friends,
baking, knitting, quilting, and gardening. Helen loved her Sunday scenic drives. She
loved to have a good conversation with her family and friends around a home cooked
meal. Helen welcomed everyone into her home, especially the friends of her children.
She enjoyed seeing her family do well and was happiest when gathered by her loved
ones. Helen was the most selfless woman you would ever meet. She wanted to make
sure that her family had what they needed and would gladly give to others before
herself. She had a humble nature and was a kind and loving soul. Helen enjoyed
spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was so proud of
them and she had a special place for each of them in her heart. Helen was the last
surviving member of her immediate family.
This past July, she lost her sister and best friend, Muriel MacInnis, whom she adored. We take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her husband, family, and friends, and that she is now at peace.
Helen is survived by her children, Darrell (Mona), Sydney Mines, Gary (Lynn), Sydney, Vaughn,
Madagascar, Darren, Balls Creek, David (Elaine), Cheticamp, Denise, Kelowna. Helen
is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren, Cheryl, Chantel, Chelsea, Coady, Karen,
Tyler, Joshua, Avery, Alex, Thomas, Taylor, Travis, Jaimee, and by eight
great-grandchildren, Robert, Kelsey, Brayden, Brooke, Noah, Isla, Gregory and Charlie.
Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Marge McInnis, Joan (Sonny) Guy, Grace
Bennett, and brother-in-law, Alex (Mabel) Bennett.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Russell Bennett, siblings, Alexander, William, Harry, George, Elizabeth, Beatrice, Muriel, and her grandson Gregory in infancy.
Helen’s family would like to thank Dr. Hickey, Dr. Keating and the nursing staff of 4 West at the Northside General Hospital for the kind and compassionate care that she received.
As per Helen’s request, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will take place on Friday, September 4th, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvin United Church Cemetery, Upper Leitches Creek under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. All are welcome to attend with social distancing required.
