Hildred Lewis Obituary

Hildred Viola Lewis, 92

North Sydney

It is with great sadness, but also with acknowledgement of a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Hildred Viola Lewis, age 92. Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020, surrounded by her adoring family.

Hildred was born in Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, on September 12, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Hilary and Vencintia (Serroul) Young. She was a devout Catholic and a longtime faithful member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney and could often be found praying for family and all those she held dear.

She is survived by her children, seven daughters: Linda (Lloyd Melbourne), Theresa (James Todd), Helen (Barry Fraser), Kathy, Chrissy (Rob Jack), Brenda, Laurie (Glen Finney); and five sons: Bobby (Beth) , Jim (Jane) , Danny (Mona) , David (Doreen) , Doug (Margaret)  and daughter-in-law, Joan Lewis. Also, survived by her sisters: Brenda MacMullin, Kaye Gale, Theresa Tobin; and brothers: Harry Young, Pat Young, Fred Young; 23 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as, many nieces and nephews, whom she loved like her own.

Hildred was pre-deceased by her loving husband, William; sons, Billy & Brian; granddaughter, Candace Melbourne; son-in-law, Michael Watson; daughter-in-law, Carol (Greene) Lewis; and sisters: Mary, Ethel, Millie, Shirley.

A devoted mother to 14 children, she was a master at many things, such as cooking and baking, which she did to help feed those in her large family and their many friends. She was a Bingo enthusiast and would often travel throughout Cape Breton for a great game. She will be fondly remembered as an avid reader and for her love of shopping and playing cards. Above all, Hildred loved spending time with her family and friends.

Many dearest thanks to the Cove Guest Home for their warm and gentle care of our mom over the past 5 years; the Northside Homecare Workers, for their compassionate care and years of friendship; and to Dr. Paul Hickey, for his many years of genuine care.

A visitation for Hildred will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Masks are mandatory and social distancing must be followed when visiting the funeral home. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions limited space is available in the church, masks are required and social distancing must be followed. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the food bank, the Cove Guest Home or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County (Friends for Hospice Campaign).
