James Gillis
North Sydney
It is with the most profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Paul James Gillis, age 39 on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a short illness.
James was born in North Sydney on August 24, 1983 to Paul and Gloria (Eveleigh) Gillis. A lover of the outdoors, some of James’ favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, tying flies and barbequing restaurant quality meals for his family. James had a kind soul and a big heart, was always willing to lend an understanding ear or helping hand and gave the most comforting, warm bearhugs that made you feel so safe and loved. His pride and joy was his daughter Priscilla. He was a committed stay-at-home dad and they shared a very close, special relationship. Priscilla is fortunate to have inherited her quick wit and sweet nature from her dad, as well as many cherished memories.
James is survived by his loving parents Paul and Gloria Gillis, his wife Elizabeth and daughter Priscilla; maternal grandmother Theresa Eveleigh; special grandmother-in-law Barbara Gracie “Nan”; in-laws Troy and Denise Fraser, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. His close friends Corey Bradbury, Bobby Van Dommelen and Chris Francis, who acted as a wonderful source of support during his entire life. They were there especially so during his time of illness, and are also left to mourn this great loss.
James was predeceased by his loving grandmother Mary Eileen Gillis, grandfather Albert Eveleigh and grandfather-in-law Joseph Gracie “Gramp”.
James was loved by all who was in his life and will be missed greatly by everyone. He always said “I just have to be me”. His father and mother always said that if there were more people like him, we all would have been blessed every day.
Visitation for James will be held from 2-4 pm Thursday, October 27, 2022 at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A prayer service will be held during the visitation by Deacon Roy Smith. Online condolences can be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
