James “Jim” Cogan
North Sydney
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of James Patrick Cogan, age 79, on Saturday, May 6, 2023, with his wife of 58 years, Georgie (Shinners) by his side. He was a loving father to Sean (Sharon), Joe (Leslie) and Therese (Ryan); Poppy to Anna, Kaitlyn (Jesse), Matthew, Kendall, Olivia and Colton and Pops to Jeremy, Jack, Jesse, Hector and Sam.
Born in North Sydney on October 6, 1943, he was the son of the late Joe and Mary (Collier) Cogan, brother of Ted (Agnes), John (Irene), and Mary Cogan, Robert MacKinnon and Geraldine (Andre) Cote. Predeceased by his sister Julia (Terry) Gallagher.
A dry wit and an honest handshake, Jim was mastering the side hustle before the internet made it popular. Best known as the owner operator of J.P. Cogan Fuels, Jim was involved in many business ventures throughout the years. Community minded, Jim gave back to the area he loved. When he wasn’t taking care of business, he loved spending time at his cabin in Newfoundland with family and friends and attending his Friday night meetings at the office with the boys. A love of all things with wheels, his car was always clean. Over the years, he was a member of Kinsmen, Knights of Columbus and the Northern Yacht Club. He was a volunteer fireman at the North Sydney Fire Department and long time Board Member at the North Sydney Forum and the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation. Jim was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers who cared for Jim over the years including the 4th floor staff at Northside General Hospital, the staff at Harbourview Hospital, Mary Rose MacTaggart, and Eddie Orrell. A special thank you to Maureen MacTaggart who went above and beyond to care for Jim and keep him at home for as long as possible.
Visitation for Jim will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service for Jim will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph Church with Deacon Dave Lewis officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
Jim loved his wife, his family and friends, his home and his work – a blessed life.
