John MacDonald Obituary

John Archibald “Archie” MacDonald

Millville

It is with sadness we announce the passing of our brother John “Archie” MacDonald, age 84, on Wednesday, October 07, 2020, at the Northside General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Millville on November 26, 1935, he was the son of the late Alexander “Sandy” and Theresa (MacIntosh) MacDonald. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.

In his youth, Archie worked as a day labourer on local farms. After receiving his accreditation as an autobody mechanic, he went to work for J.D. Steele Monuments in Sydney Mines as a stencil designer and monument maker.  He spent many years working for Joneljim Construction as a labourer.  He finished his career working as a sheet metal mechanic for Gulf Marine Sheet Metal.

Archie never met a blade of grass he didn’t want to mow, nor snowflake he didn’t want to shovel.  He was an unofficial paper deliverer for the Cape Breton Post.  His crows miss his regular handouts.

He is survived by his sister Bernice Ferguson, Millville and brothers David, Big Bras d’Or, Ronald, Dieppe, NB and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister Mary Whitty.

Many thanks go out to the caring, compassionate and professional nurses on 4 West at the Northside General Hospital, Palliative Care staff, Dr. Ritter, Dr. Wawer and Dr. Bill MacDonald.

There will be no visitation.  A funeral mass for Archie will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Michel Exalant officiating.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions limited space is available in the church, masks are required and social distancing must be followed.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or.  Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
