John Slade Obituary

John William Slade

North Sydney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, poppy, brother and friend, John Slade, age 80, on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his daughter, Judy, at his side.

Born in Florence, on September 24, 1941, dad is the son of the late John and Violet (Patey) Slade. In his earlier years, he loved to hunt and fish with his friend of over 60 years, Ches “Bug” Eavis. Dad worked with Marine Atlantic as a stevedore for 49 years. He had a great sense of humor and loved being in the kitchen. He loved being surrounded by his family. Dad was a great cook and his family enjoyed eating his creations. If you ever came to poppy's house upset, his cure all was to offer a cup of tea and a sandwich.

Dad is survived by his two daughters, Judy Slade, Florence and Nancy Collins, North Sydney; his three grandchildren, Jennifer Musgrave, Florence, Craig (Anique) Musgrave, Florence and Ryan Collins (Kristin), Sydney Mines; his brother, Don (Anita) Slade, Sydney, who was dad's Saturday morning coffee buddy; his sister in law Gertie Slade, North Sydney; his special friend Annie Murphy, Sydney River; and, his good friend and neighbor Bug Eavis.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years Mary (Garnier); his brothers Ern and Bob; his sisters, Mae, Sylvia and Shirley; two brothers in infancy; and, his brothers-in-law, Ian, John and Charlie.

The girls wanted to send a special thank you to Annie Murphy, who always made dad smile. Dad enjoyed her company and she was always there to lend a helping hand when we couldn't.

Judy and Nancy would like to thank Dr. Patrick O'Grady, who was dad's doctor for many years and who was always there when needed; we would also like to thank Dr. Khodadad and the staff at the cancer clinic at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who are second to none, and Dr. Dale Miller, Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The family would also like to thank the EMTs and the doctors and nurses who cared for dad at the Emergency Room.

By request, there will be no visitation and a private service for the family will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating.  Covid restrictions will be in place with proof of vaccine, photo ID, wearing of masks, social distancing and limited seating for the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Centre.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
